• Sahih International
And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, “Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.” They said, “Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?” Allah said, “Indeed, I know that which you do not know.”
Al Baqarah (2), Ayah 30
Angels clearly spoke Arabic as it is quoted in arabic in this verse otherwise Allah would quote it in another language, rather than it allegedly be a translation in Arabic of what they said. If Musa spoke Hebrew why wasn’t he quoted in Hebrew? Muḥammad could have easily gone to Hebrew people and help him translate or Allah teaches man what he could not know. People have to give proof that they didn’t speak arabic.
Even the tafāsīr and aḥadīth of the Sunnis themselves says that the language of Adam in paradise was Arabic:
It is reported that Ibn ʿAbbās said: “The first tongue to be spoken on the tongue of Adam and his children was Arabic.” This is sometimes phrased as, “The language of Adam in Paradise was Arabic.”
Tafsir Tabari
Abū Hurayrah said: “Adam spoke Arabic. When he disobeyed his Lord, his Lord stripped him of his light. Adam then said, ‘O Lord, why have you stripped me of my light?’ He said, ‘Because of your sin.’ Adam said, ‘But you had already decreed it for me!’ So Allah restored to him the light of his face and taught him all the names, and he spoke in Arabic.”
Al-Muṣannaf of Ibn Abī Shaybah.
ʿIkrimah said: “The first language spoken by Adam when Allah breathed into him was Arabic. He said, ‘Al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi al-ʿālamīn.’ Then Allah taught him the names, all of them, in Arabic.”
Tafsir Tabari
Wahb ibn Munabbih said: “When Allah created Adam, He taught him the names of everything in Arabic. Then He commanded the angels to prostrate to him, and they did, except Iblis… Adam resided in Paradise speaking Arabic until he was cast down.”
Tarikh Al Tabari
Ikrimah In his commentary on the verse “And to Mūsā Allāh spoke directly” (Quran 4:164), Ikrimah is reported to have said: “He spoke to him in Arabic.”
Abū ʿUbaydah Maʿmar ibn al-Muthannā Was asked about those who say Adam spoke Syriac. He replied: “This is the statement of the Zanādiqah”
Abū Ḥātim al-Sijistānī said: “Whoever claims that Adam spoke any language other than Arabic has innovated.”
Ibn Fāris In his foundational work Al-Ṣāḥibī fī Fiqh al-Lughah, he dedicates a chapter to proving Arabic is the “most complete of languages” and the first. He writes:
“A group of the people of knowledge said: The first to speak Arabic was Adam… and whoever says he spoke Syriac has said a grave thing”
Abū ʿUbaydah Maʿmar ibn al-Muthannā is reported to have said: “The prophets, all of them, spoke Arabic.”
“We did not send any messenger except in the language of his people” (Ibrahim 14:4)
Ibn Fāris in Al-Ṣāḥibī fī Fiqh al-Lughah says It is not conceivable that the prophets, peace be upon them, were ignorant of it.(Arabic Lisan)”
Historians state that there is a language where all languages derive from; they usually call this Proto-Indo-European. My premise is that this language is the Arabic language. My evidence is from the Qur’an.
In 41:44: “And if We had made it a foreign [i.e., non-Arabic] Qur’ān, they would have said, ‘Why are its verses not explained in detail [in our language]? Is it a foreign [recitation] and an Arab [messenger]?'”
And in 42:7: “And thus We have revealed to you an Arabic Qur’ān that you may warn the Mother of Cities…”
When Musa spoke to Allah in Surah Ta-Ha, the speech of Allah was in Arabic (Qur’an 20:12).
When Suleyman wrote a letter to the Queen of Sheba in Surah An-Naml, the introduction was “Bismillah Hir-Rahmaniir-Raheem” (Qur’an 27:23-30).
In Surah Al-Jinn, the jinn said, “Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur’ān” (Qur’an 72:1), so the jinn were speaking Arabic.
Allah and Adam had a conversation in Al-Baqarah, verse 33: “He said, ‘O Adam, inform them of their names.’ And when he had informed them of their names, He said, ‘Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth? And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed.'”
This was in Arabic. The dialogue continued in the verses mentioned afterwardsIblis spoke to Adam; when he spoke to Adam, he spoke in Arabic (7:20): “But Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said, ‘Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or become of the immortal.'”
Never is it mentioned that a language other than Arabic was being spoken. It would be grasping at straws to assume the language being spoken was another language and the Qur’an was translating the language into Arabic in these verses.
In paradise, the angels say “Salamun Alaikum” as they enter its gates (Qur’an 13:23-24).
And the final evidence would be the coinage where Arabic is found worldwide; here is a video explaining that.
zero:
The word ‘zero’ comes from the Arabic sifr, meaning ‘empty’ or ‘nothing’. Fibonacci, a thirteenth-century Italian mathematician introduced the concept of ‘zero’ to Europe when he returned from studying in North Africa.
Safari:
The Swahili speakers of East Africa gave English this word, which means ‘an expedition’ and comes from the Arabic word for ‘journey’ (safar).
Sofa:
The word ‘sofa’ came to English from Turkish, where it refers to a raised section of a floor covered with carpets and cushions. The Turks got the word from the Arabic suffah, which means ‘a ledge or bench made of stone or wood’. In America and Australia, however, a ‘sofa’ is usually called a ‘couch’.
Coffee:
Arab traders brought coffee to Arabia from East Africa and called it kahwah. They shared it with their neighbours, the Ottoman Empire, who called it kahveh, and from there the Turks shared it with the world.
Sugar
As was the case with coffee, Arab traders were important in the spread of sugar in Europe. English gets the word via the French sucre and the Latin succarum, which comes from the Arabic sukkar.
Cotton
Early Arab traders introduced Indian cotton to Europe along with the Arabic word qutn, which is where the English term comes from.
Algebra
The word ‘algebra’ comes from al-jabr, meaning ‘a reunion of broken parts’, which referred to the setting of broken bones until a ninth-century Arabic book changed the meaning of the term. The author of the book was al-Khwarizmi, whose name gives us another mathematical term: ‘algorithm’.
7 English words that come from Arabic
Alcohol
According to the Oxford English dictionary, the word Alcohol originates from the Arabic world al-kuḥl ‘the kohl’, which in early use referred to powders, specifically kohl, and especially those obtained by sublimation; later ‘a distilled or rectified spirit’ in the mid 17th century.
Magazine
The word magazine originally meant warehouse or place for storing goods in the 1580s, which originated from the Arabic makhazin, plural of makhzan “storehouse”, from khazana “to store up.” According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the original sense of the word is now almost obsolete.
Saffron
The spice saffron earned its name from the Arabic az-za’faran, which is of unknown origin. The Online Etymology Dictionary adds that the Russian shafran’ is also from Arabic.
10 English Words You Didn’t Know Came From Arabic
Algorithm
Every time you use an algorithm, you should remember that the name was used to name it over the person who invented the steps to solve the mathematical problems Mohammad Al-Khwarizmi. Hence the Arabic term (خوارزمية) is given in Arabic after him before it was transferred to English among other languages.
Orange
People who speak Arabic know that Orange translates to Burtuqal. Yet, we can say that Orange is derived from Arabic! A few centuries ago, we did not have Oranges in the Mediterranean basin. Arabic merchants brought oranges with them from India. These Oranges were bitter not like the ones we have today and they were called Naranj (نارنج) in Arabic. Today Oranges are still called Naranj in Spain, but in English and French, they use the name Orange.
